Lichens are "... are composite organisms consisting of a fungus and photosynthetic partner growing together in a symbiotic relationship" according to Wikipedia. And I think, mind you I am no expert, this is what is know as "map lichen". You will find them on rocks in alpine regions. They grow very slowly, and form beautiful, map like patterns.
